45 Fridays

I'm posting kinda late/early whichever way you look at it, but today we are gonna talk about a 7 inch record that holds so much heat. Last week we did some Funky/Soul stuff but this week it's gonna be about raw Funk...

The 45 of the week is "Scorpio" by Dennis Coffey and his Detroit Guitar Band. A classic break that was released on 45 in 1971 on Sussex Records and later released that year on the Evolution LP. It's an instrumental jam that can easily be played from beginning to end but it does have one of the nastiest breaks in there! On the flip side is the Soul ballad "Sad Angel" which lends to the diversity these musicians have. The track features Coffey's band but also featured Bob Babbit on bass who was a Motown session musician that made the track shine with the infectious bass lines.

Scorpio has been sampled many times by artists such as Public Enemy, the Geto Boys, LL Cool J, Lord Finesse, Mos Def, Young MC, and countless others who have used it in some form or another in their music. It's definitely a classic.

Dennis Coffey hails from Detroit where he still performs. I just found out he will be at SXSW and that is something I will not miss!

See ya next week for the Mardi Gras themed 45 Friday!!!

Love & Hate : A bittersweet lovers mix

When I went to Oakland last month, I had the privilege of getting a sneak peak of this mix he had literally JUST finished before he came to pick me and Cheech up at the BART station. We drove around Oakland as he showed us all the sights and places of interest. Listening to it right now brings me right back there. Damn, I wanna go back!!!!

45 Fridays

Welcome to the first installment of 45 Fridays! Every Friday I'm gonna showcase a different 45 and give you insight on some classic music that might be forgotten. Let's gooooo!

First 45 is... Ike and Tina Turner song "Funkier Than a Mosquito's Tweeter" which is actually a cover originally done by Nina Simone. Nina first released this track on 45 with "Save Me" as the A-side in 1969 (Madlib fans Weldon Irvine was the conductor on the original Mosquito). The track wasn't released on an LP until 1974, It Is Finished on RCA is amazing from beginning to end if you get a chance to check it out. Now Ike and Tina: They released a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's Proud Mary on 45 in 1971 on Liberty, guess what was on the flip? A Funky-ass cover of Nina's song that breathed new life into it! Funkay stuff here...

See ya in the crates!

NOLA Funk & Soul Vinyl

Hey DJs: You are in one of the cities that has so much music it's ridiculous. Take advantage of your local record stores and buy up your NOLA Funk and Soul, collectors and DJs come here from all over the world just to buy our local vinyl. There are treasures right here in your city!

When I first started diggin' for records I always put the New Orleans vinyl last as a priority because I figured it would always be there and now some of those records I took for granted are now gone. Don't make my mistake! (Iko Iko 45)

The Meters, The Gaturs, Galactic, Rufus Thomas, Ernie K-Doe, Lee Dorsey, and The Wild Magnolias just to name a few artists whose music has contributed to Hip Hop over the years, support your local record shops and go support your local music scene! Shout out to Euclid Records, Jim Russell's Records, Dominos, Peaches Records, and the Mushroom for giving me nasty crates.

XOXO

P.S. Don't forget those thrift stores for the real diggers...

Diggin'

The other day I had a chance to stop by one of my local record shops and what was going to be a ten minute browsing session turned into a three hour dig. Shout Out to Euclid records! One of the things I love/hate about a record store is that within that two hours I was able to discover 5 artists that I would never have discovered unless I got my hands dirty! I also found some 45s I've been looking for: Doubles, rare groove, and some back catalog stuff that I should have already. One of the gems I found is in the picture, I think De La Soul might like this track. See ya in the crates!
